What We Have Here is a Failure to Communicate!

“The world is lying Good and the Church is telling the Truth Badly!”

"Regardless of the changes in technology, the market for well-crafted messages will always have an audience."
Steve Burnett
The Burnett Group

E-Trade, GEICO Insurance, Verizon Wireless, and many other companies are making huge impacts in their markets because they have mastered marketing themselves to America through a well crafted message. They have an audience for their products and services because they have the ears and eyes of their audience. People want to see and hear their commercials because they are quirky and memorable. They have the basic substance of what they do yet a catchy idea that they revolve their services and product information around to let the audience know how it’s relative to them.

When I think of Verizon Wireless I see a guy with black glasses standing in the middle of a tunnel saying, “Can you hear me now?” This has effectively signed up customers to use their wireless services because this guy went to every place in the world where cell phone service is bad and with Verizon can talk clearly without dropping calls.

When I think of GEICO Insurance I know if I wanted to change to them it would be easy because, “It’s so easy, even a caveman can do it.” I know that I have a chance of saving 15% or more by switching from my current provider to GEICO insurance. You know why I know this? Because a green Gecko Lizard told me!

When I think of E-Trade I see the baby in the high chair talking about trades, stocks and investments. I know that if I want to trade stocks easily then I can go to E-Trade. Why? Because they have a baby as the spokesperson! This says it’s so easy a baby can even do it. “Next time try reading the rules shankapotomus!”

I don’t have any vested interest in any of these companies yet I know there slogans and services because they have created well crafted messages informing their audience of who they are and what they can do for them. I bring this up because the business world is doing a great job communicating their message to their audiences yet the church world is failing in communicating their message to their audiences!

Businesses are utilizing humor, quirky campaigns, spokespeople, imaginative characters, slogans, catchy phrases, and memorable jingles all for the sole purpose to burn their brand image into the eyes, ears and hearts of their audience. They are successfully exposing the need of the consumer and providing the solutions through their services. Now their services may not be the best in their industry. They may have a lesser quality product, a sloppier process and weaker benefits but they are gaining new clients everyday over companies that have better quality, a smoother process and stronger benefits simply because they have mastered marketing their message effectively.

These businesses asked themselves these simple questions in order to discover the needs of there potential client base.

- What is the message we want people to hear?
- Why would you want to do business with us?
- What do we have that you want or need?
- What do we offer that you won’t get anywhere else?

Once they had these answers they then creatively answered these questions through brilliant yet simple marketing.

As a church, ministry or any non-profit Christ centered organization we hold within our hands the greatest potential, the most relative message and the most common solution to all of humanities needs, yet we struggle to market the message effectively. As the CEO, Pastor or Leader of your organization, ministry or church ask yourselves these simple questions to re-evaluate whether you’re still aiming your efforts, programs, outreaches and messages to the needs of your potential client base.

- What is the message we want people to hear?
- Why would you want to partner, support or become a member with us?
- What do we have that you want or need?
-
What do we offer that you won’t get anywhere else?

Once you have these answers, now creatively market your message to focus on meeting these needs.

Matthew 4:19 (New Living Translation)
19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”

This scripture is very powerful. In this statement Jesus is speaking to Peter and his brother Andrew. They are both at work, casting their nets into the water, doing what they know best. They were fishermen by trade. This is what they did for a living, to provide for themselves and their families, so they knew how to do it and to prepare for a day of fishing. So when Jesus says to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” These two men knew and understood the parallel of what He was saying.

The first part to this is:

  1. Follow Jesus
As kids we would play a game called follow the leader. This meant we were to do whatever the leader did, say whatever the leader said, go wherever the leader went and act however the leader acted. Jesus is the leader and we are to follow Him in the same way. Follow Him in what he says, where he goes and how he acts. As we follow His Word we will be led into the blessings and provisions promised to us through obedience. Not only will we be led in those areas’ as we follow Him, but He will also lead us in showing us how to effectively fish for people.

The second part to this is:

  1. He Will Make Us Fishers of Men
Matthew 4:19 (King James Version)
19 And He saith unto them, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of Men.”

The phrase “I will make” means to endow a person or thing with a certain quality. It means to qualify and to appoint. This shows us that Jesus will endow us with the quality to fish for people if we follow Him. This shows us that Jesus will appoint us the ability to be able to creatively and effectively, throw out the line and catch the attention of people in drawing them into the nets of salvation. This means that even though we may not qualify to be marketing and advertising experts, Jesus will qualify us with the right stuff to effectively market and advertise the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and Christ so that people will gravitate to the message and be captured in the net of His Love!

The third part of this is:

  1. Fish For People
This means that if we never throw our lines into the water then we will never catch the fish. We can’t lose something we don’t have, so what will it hurt in trying to catch the attention of people to draw them into the nets of God’s forgiveness and love.

When we put together a plan of action to grow our church, to outreach to the community, to serve our towns and to make a difference in this world we are symbolically throwing out our nets and are fishing for people.

Now some days may be better then others in how many people you catch, but that’s not for you to worry about. All you need to do is your part and God will take care of the increase.

1 Corinthians 3:6 (Amplified Bible)
6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God [all the while] was making it grow and [He] gave the increase.

Use your divinely endowed ability to creatively and effectively grow, serve and make a difference in your community and church. Communicate the message properly and clearly and you will have the ears and eyes of your audience you aimed to reach. You can win the battle for their lives through the gravitational pull of your message. When you do it right it’s like gravity. Gravity is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as the force of attraction that moves or tends to move bodies towards the centre of a celestial body, such as the earth or moon. I think this definition is outstanding! In using this definition an effective marketing idea is like the force of attraction that moves or tends to move bodies towards the centre of a celestial body, such as the Body of Christ Himself, which is His Church!
